"Every job I take on, I treat it like it's my own home."

How Mercer Roofing Was Born

In 2000, Grant Whitlock was running service calls for a roofing outfit that treated every job like a transaction and every homeowner like an inconvenience. He saw it happen too often: a quote that sounded reasonable over the phone, then a crew that showed up late, worked fast, and left behind a mess and a bill that didn’t match what was promised. One afternoon he stood in a living room in Los Angeles while a homeowner, a retired teacher, showed him three different invoices for the same leak. She’d paid twice already. The roof still leaked. She asked Grant, quietly, if anyone actually knew what they were doing anymore. That conversation stuck with him longer than any roof he’d ever climbed.

He started Mercer Roofing that year with a simple conviction: you shouldn’t need to be suspicious when someone works on your home. He believed the roofing trade had drifted away from something essential. A roofer should show up when they say they will, look you in the eye, quote a fair written price, and stand behind the work. That became the company’s foundation. Since then, Mercer Roofing has grown from that first Los Angeles home base into a national network of independently owned and operated locations, each one held to the same standard. Same promise. Same plain-spoken reliability.

Grant Whitlock’s Personal Connection to the Roofing Trade

Grant didn’t grow up dreaming about shingles. He found roofing the way a lot of people find the work they’re meant to do: by accident, and then by necessity. His first exposure came from a family friend’s construction crew when he was young and needed steady hours. He spent that first summer hauling materials and clearing gutters, mostly just trying not to slow anybody down. But something about the roofline got under his skin. The work was hard in the honest sense: you could feel your progress by lunchtime, and you could stand back at the end of the day and see exactly what you had done. That clarity mattered to him.

The sensory details never left him. The way the air heats up ten degrees the moment you climb past the eaves. The smell of fresh underlayment unrolling in the morning sun. The sound a nail gun makes echoing down a quiet cul-de-sac. The particular satisfaction of a watertight valley that angles just right. Over the years, those details shaped how he thinks about the trade. He learned to read a roof the way some people read a map: a blister pattern here, a granule line there, each one telling you something about what’s happening beneath the surface. A roof doesn’t hide its problems. It reveals them slowly, and you have to be willing to look.

What gets him out of bed in the morning is the knowledge that a roof is the one part of a home that people trust but rarely think about. It protects everything underneath it. When it fails, everything below suffers. Grant has spent decades making sure that when a homeowner calls Mercer Roofing, they never have to wonder whether the person on the other end of the phone actually understands what’s at stake. If he weren’t doing this, he’d probably be teaching carpentry to apprentices somewhere. But he is doing this, and it still matters to him the way it did on that first summer.

Meet Grant Whitlock – The Person Behind Every Job

Grant Whitlock is the Owner & Founder of Mercer Roofing, part of the Threshold Group family of brands. He has spent more than two decades in the roofing trade, working his way from ground-level labor to master-level diagnostics and full system replacement. His background is hands-on: installation, repair, inspection, ventilation, and the kind of troubleshooting that comes only from standing on hundreds of roofs in nearly every season and setting.

What separates him from a corporate franchise technician is accountability. He built the standards that Mercer Roofing locations follow, and he takes them personally. He still reviews job notes, still walks through the hard cases with the local teams, still believes that a roofer’s reputation is the only marketing that ever truly worked. Away from the job, he’s a reader and a terrible but enthusiastic cook. The same patience he brings to slow-simmering a sauce he brings to explaining a repair estimate to a homeowner who has never looked at a roofline in their life. He does not rush. He does not bluff. He wants you to understand what you’re paying for before you pay for it.

Every job that carries the Mercer name carries his commitment along with it: show up, do the work correctly, charge what was quoted, and leave the home better than you found it.

Our Promise to Homeowners

We price honestly, in writing, before any work begins. That’s not a slogan. It’s a rule that every Mercer Roofing location follows. You get a written line-item estimate so you can see exactly where your money goes, and the price on that estimate is the price you pay. No change orders appear out of nowhere once the tear-off starts.

We use quality parts because cheap materials fail in ways that cost homeowners more later. And we stand behind every job with a workmanship warranty that’s explained to you plainly before you sign anything. If something isn’t right, we come back and make it right. That’s the whole point of putting our name on the work in the first place.

Our Credentials

Every pro working under the Mercer Roofing name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. We never ask a homeowner to take our word on this. We verify it, and we can walk you through what coverage applies to your job before work starts.

  • State-licensed in every market we serve, with credentials held by the local team handling your roof.
  • Insured & bonded at the standard required for residential roofing work in your area.
  • Background-checked and identity-verified technicians on every job, under the Threshold Standard.
  • Written estimates before work starts, always.
  • Threshold Verified coverage on every Mercer Roofing job.

Why does that matter to a homeowner? Because the person climbing onto your roof is walking on top of everything you own. They’re above your rooms, your family, your possessions. A license means they’ve met the state’s bar for competence. Insurance means you’re protected if something goes wrong. A background check and a photo ID badge at the door mean you know exactly who you’re letting in. Those aren’t extras. They’re the baseline.

Rooted in the Communities We Serve

Mercer Roofing was first established in Los Angeles, and that’s still part of our story. But the company has grown into a national network with local teams serving homeowners across the country, from California cities like San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Long Beach, and Anaheim, to markets in Florida and beyond. Each Mercer Roofing location is an independently owned and operated local business that agreed to work to a shared standard. That means the team nearest you knows the local weather patterns, the local roof failures, and the local building expectations. They live where you live. They just happen to carry the same name and the same promise on their work.
