IKO Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

IKO shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs $350 to $900 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and whether the underlayment beneath them took water. We keep IKO-compatible shingles on our trucks and can match most current IKO lines the same week we inspect your roof. Most homeowners discover an IKO shingle problem the hard way: a dark water stain on the ceiling after the first real rain, granules collecting in the gutter, or a shingle flap lifting in the Santa Ana winds. You’re not just looking at one shingle at that point. You’re looking at what got past it.

The good news is that IKO shingles are well-documented, and a repair done right buys you real time. The bad news is that Los Angeles roofing conditions are brutal on any shingle, and IKO’s are no exception. Between the UV exposure, the heat reflecting off stucco and tile, and the sudden temperature swings in neighborhoods like Sylmar or Woodland Hills, shingles here age differently than they do in, say, Seattle. We see it every week: an IKO roof that should have ten years left, but the south-facing slope is already shedding granules and curling at the corners.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO makes three shingle families that dominate Los Angeles residential roofs: the Cambridge architectural series, the Dynasty performance architectural line, and the older Marathon three-tab series that is now being phased out of local supply houses. The Cambridge and Dynasty lines are what we repair most often in LA, simply because they were installed heavily in the 2000s and 2010s and are now hitting the age where sealant strips fail and wind uplift starts to win.

The compatibility gotcha with IKO is color drift between production runs. IKO’s “Dual Black” or “Weatherwood” from 2016 is not the identical shade as the same named color from 2023. Granule color shifts over time as IKO sources stone from different quarries. That means a patch job with new shingles on an old IKO roof can look like a patch job, even when the label says the same color. When we match IKO shingles, we check the roof’s existing course, the bundle code, and the manufacture date, and we’ll tell you honestly if a seamless match is possible or if you should expect a slight tone difference that will fade with UV exposure. On steep, highly visible slopes, we may recommend relocating shingles from a less visible area to the damaged spot and using the new stock in the hidden section.

Mercer Roofing is an independent roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with IKO, and we don’t pretend to be. We do stock and install IKO shingles alongside GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed, and we’ll match the right product to what is already on your roof, not push you into a brand swap.

Signs Your IKO Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules in the gutter or at downspout exits. A tablespoon or two after a storm is normal for an aging roof. A visible layer of dark granules every time you clean the gutter means the shingle’s UV protection is washing away, and the asphalt beneath is next. On IKO Cambridge shingles, we often see this start on the south and west exposures first.
  • Curling or lifting shingle edges. IKO shingles have a sealant strip that bonds the tab to the course below. When that strip fails, wind gets under the tab and curls it upward. You’ll see this most clearly from the street on a sunny day, when curled shingles cast small shadows. In the San Fernando Valley, the dry heat accelerates sealant failure faster than almost anywhere in the country.
  • A shingle that is torn, cracked, or folded. Falling branches, roof traffic from a satellite dish install, or a bad tennis-ball retrieval mission can break a shingle. An IKO architectural shingle is thick and laminated, so it usually cracks rather than tears. Once it cracks, water gets into the mat, and the shingle loses its structural integrity fast.
  • Water staining on ceilings or along exterior walls. By the time you see this, the shingle has been passing water for a while. The leak may not even be near the stain, water travels along the decking and rafters before it drops. This is the point where a repair is no longer just a shingle swap, it’s a shingle swap plus decking inspection and possibly underlayment replacement.
  • Shingles sliding or missing after high winds. LA’s Santa Ana events hit 50 to 70 mph in the foothills and passes. If shingles are gone or sliding, the roof is open to everything. This is an immediate call, not a “wait until spring” item.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here is what IKO shingle repair work runs in Los Angeles as of 2025:

  • Single shingle replacement (accessible slope, no decking damage): $350 to $500
  • Small repair area (up to 10 shingles, one slope): $500 to $750
  • Larger repair with underlayment or decking patch: $750 to $1,200
  • Full ridge or valley re-seal: $450 to $700

Every quote includes the shingles, labor, disposal of old material, and a written workmanship guarantee. What drives the price up is what we find underneath: if the decking is soft or the underlayment has torn, that gets repaired before the new shingle goes down, and we’ll show you a photo of the damage before we proceed. One thing we will not do is quote you a price and then tack on change orders once we’re on the roof. Your written quote covers everything we agree to, and if we find hidden damage, you approve the fix before we make it.

The IKO shingles themselves run roughly $45 to $60 per bundle at Los Angeles supply houses, and a bundle covers about 33 square feet. Labor is the larger share. Steep roof access, a second-story pitch, or a tile-to-shingle transition on older LA homes adds time, not mystery. We’ll tell you exactly what we’re charging for and why.

DIY or Call Us?

Repairing a single IKO shingle is not inherently dangerous like working on a garage door spring or an electrical panel. It’s ladder work and dexterity work, and on a one-story home with a walkable pitch, a careful homeowner can manage it. Here’s the honest split: you can safely check a few things yourself. Look for granules in the gutter, look for curling from the street, and check the attic for water staining after rain. If you find a single shingle lifted on a low, accessible slope, and you have a stable ladder and know how to use a flat bar without damaging the shingle above, it is a doable Saturday job in dry weather.

Where DIY goes wrong is the second you’re on a second-story roof, on anything steeper than a 4:12 pitch, or working near a valley or flashing detail. Falls from roofs are not minor. We have seen more bad patch jobs than we can count: shingle nailed through the wrong spot, sealant strips broken by carelessness, and one memorable homeowner who used construction adhesive and then could not understand why the shingle failed again two weeks later. If you’re not fully comfortable on the roof, call us at (743) 200-8347. The quote is free, and a roof that is properly repaired is a roof you stop thinking about.
