Common Questions

Do I need roofing experience to own a Mercer Roofing franchise?

No, you don’t need to have swung a hammer yourself. What you need is the ability to run a business, manage people, and hold your operation to a standard. Many of our strongest owners come from outside the trades, from sales management, operations, or the military. That said, you do need to respect the work. Roofing is detail-heavy, and the customer is trusting you with the single most protective layer of their home. Mercer trains you on the technical side, the pricing discipline, and the customer experience from day one, but you’re the one who has to enforce it.

What’s the total investment range to open a Mercer Roofing location?

The total initial investment for a Mercer Roofing franchise typically falls between $180,000 and $320,000 depending on your market, local real estate, and the size of your launch team. That range includes the franchise fee, initial equipment, branded vehicles, inventory, and the working capital you need to cover payroll and operating costs before revenue stabilizes. We lay out every cost category in our Franchise Disclosure Document, and we walk you through it line by line before you sign anything.

Is financing available?

Mercer Roofing does not offer direct financing, but we do connect prospective owners with third-party lenders who understand home-service franchise models. SBA loans are a common path, and many of our owners use a mix of SBA financing, personal equity, and retirement account rollovers. You should bring your own financial advisor into the conversation early, and we’ll help you understand what lenders look for in a roofing franchise candidate.

What territory or exclusivity do I get?

Each Mercer Roofing owner receives a defined, protected territory based on population and housing density, not just a zip code line on a map. We don’t sell overlapping territories, and if we place an owner in a market, that market is theirs to develop. The exact size and shape of your territory is negotiated before you sign the agreement, and we document it clearly, because vague territory language is how franchises create internal competition, and we are not interested in that.

How long is the training program?

Initial training runs three weeks. The first week covers the business side: pricing, job costing, the written-quote system, and how we handle the phone. The second week is technical: roof anatomy, common failure points, brand specifications for GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko, and Boral materials, and what a correct repair actually looks like. The third week is in the field with an established Mercer crew, learning how the Threshold Standard gets enforced on a real job site.

What are the ongoing fees and royalties?

Mercer Roofing collects a royalty on gross revenue and a modest brand fund contribution, both of which are disclosed in full in the Franchise Disclosure Document before you commit. The royalty covers what we actually provide: the brand, the booking systems, the training updates, and the ongoing support from the Threshold Group team. We don’t hide fees in the back of the document or invent new ones after you sign. You’ll know exactly what you pay, and exactly what you get for it.

How long does it take to open once I sign?

Plan on roughly 90 to 120 days from signed agreement to your first job. That window covers territory mapping, insurance and licensing, vehicle and equipment procurement, hiring and background-checking your first technicians, and the three-week training program. Some owners move faster, particularly those with a commercial space already lined up. Some take a little longer if the local permit office is slow. We would rather you launch a week late and right than a week early and sloppy.

What support does Mercer Roofing provide after opening?

You get a dedicated franchise support manager who has run a roofing operation themselves, not just someone reading from a playbook. You get ongoing training on new shingle products and installation methods. You get access to the booking and dispatch systems. And you get the marketing infrastructure: the website, the local SEO foundation, the review systems, and the brand reputation that comes from being part of the Threshold Group family. What you don’t get is someone doing the work for you. This is your business to run.

Who is the ideal Mercer Roofing franchisee?

The ideal owner is someone who is calm under pressure, direct with people, and allergic to cutting corners. You don’t need to be the most outgoing person in the room, but you do need to be the kind of person who follows through. Roofing is not a sales gimmick business. Homeowners are trusting you with their family’s safety, and the best Mercer owners take that personally.

What’s the next step if I’m interested?

Call the franchise line. A real person answers, which is exactly the standard we hold every Mercer location to. You’ll have a conversation, not a recorded pitch. We’ll talk about the model, answer your questions, and get you the Franchise Disclosure Document if you want to move forward.
